ค่าความขุ่นของแหล่งน้ำ: แหล่งน้ำโดยทั่วไปไม่ควรมีค่าความขุ่นเกินกว่า 100 NTU เพราะจะส่งผลกระทบต่อการดำรงชีวิตของสัตว์และพืชน้ำ นอกจากนี้ จะมีผลต่อระบบการผลิตน้ำประปาที่ต้องเพิ่มค่าใช้จ่ายสำหรับสารเคมีในการกำจัดตะกอนของน้ำ
- น้ำใสจะมีค่าความขุ่นไม่เกิน 25 NTU
- น้ำขุ่นปานกลางมีค่าความขุ่นระหว่าง 25 – 100 NTU
- น้ำขุ่นมากจะมีค่าความขุ่นเกิน 100 NTU
- ส่วนค่ามาตรฐานความขุ่นของน้ำประปา จะมีค่าไม่เกิน 5 NTU
